Lesson 02

02. Img2Img Strength Control

Learn denoising strength ranges for style transfer vs structural preservation in Stable Diffusion img2img.

What img2img does

Img2img starts from your uploaded image encoded into latent space, then adds noise according to denoising strength and regenerates toward your prompt. Low strength keeps layout; high strength reinterprets the scene.

Strength ranges

  • 0.2–0.4 — light polish, color grade, texture cleanup
  • 0.45–0.65 — style shift while keeping structure (pose, perspective)
  • 0.7+ — heavy reinterpretation; composition may drift

Treat strength as a dial between preserve and * reinvent*.

Prompt pairing

At low strength, use prompts that describe what is already visible (same pose, improved lighting). At medium strength, describe desired style while referencing structure (watercolor version of this street). At high strength, write as if text-to-image and accept layout changes.

When to choose img2img

  • Turn sketches or 3D blockouts into finished art
  • Apply a new palette or season to an existing photo
  • Unify a series of references under one visual language

Practice

Upload a sketch, run at 0.35 and 0.6 with the same prompt, and note structural drift. Document which strength preserves hands and perspective for your subject.
