Lesson 05

05. Anime & Illustration with SDXL

Build clean anime / illustration looks on SDXL with line quality, cel shading, and character sheet tips.

Key ideas

  • Name the art medium explicitly: cel shading, watercolor wash, ink line art, manga screentone.
  • Prefer checkpoints or LoRAs trained for illustration when available.
  • Keep negatives focused on photoreal artifacts: photorealistic, 3d render, noisy skin pores.

Line and color

For crisp anime lines, mention clean line art, flat color, cel shading, and a simple background. Busy prompts dilute line clarity. Use aspect ratios suited to character art (2:3, 3:4).

Character sheets

Multi-view consistency improves when you:

  1. Describe fixed traits (hair, outfit, accessories) in a shared prefix.
  2. Generate front view first; reuse seed or img2img for side and 3/4 views.
  3. Keep lighting neutral (soft studio) so views match.

SDXL vs SD 1.5 anime stacks

SDXL offers higher native resolution and cleaner defaults; SD 1.5 has a vast anime LoRA ecosystem. Pick SDXL for print-ready single pieces; pick 1.5 when a niche LoRA only exists there.

Practice

Generate a character turnaround: front, side, and 3/4 view with a shared trait block and seed strategy. Note which view needed inpaint fixes.
